“What does it mean?” Cecilia questioned, her eyes filling with worry and fear. Phillip gently stroked her cheek with his thumb, his gaze filled with concern. He put his arm around her waist and pulled her closer to him as they laid beneath the covers.
“I don’t know,” he answered sincerely, “but I won’t let anything happen to you. Promise.”
Cecilia closed her eyes as she tucked her head beneath his chin. She wasn’t sure what to make of his words. She was worried for herself, yes, but she did not want him involved. She did not want him in danger. Cecilia sighed, not sure what to think of anything.
“I love you” she whispered to him after a moment. She felt his hand start to draw circles on her bare back.
“I love you too” he said and she could hear a smile in his voice. This caused her to smile. As usual, her heartbeat picked up and she felt her breath get taken away by those simple three words. Three simple words that held her life in their meaning.
Cecilia was about to try to fall back asleep, when the doors suddenly burst open. She and Phillip both jerked up in surprise. Cecilia quickly wrapped the cover around her as a bunch of men came storming into the room.
“What is this?!” Phillip demanded angrily as he stood up from the bed. “What right have you?”
“Miss Cecilia has been accused of witchcraft” answered a man that Cecilia recognized as the local priest. He was also her uncle.
“Witchcraft?!” Phillip questioned in disbelief, “I can tell you that no such thing has been com-”
Phillip didn’t get a chance to finish as Cecilia’s uncle plunged a knife into his midsection.
“No!” Cecilia screamed as Phillip fell to the ground. Strange choking sounds started coming from him. Cecilia started to sob uncontrollably and went to go to Phillip, but two men grabbed her and dragged her out of the bed and towards the door. She barely managed to keep the cover around her.
“Phillip!” she hollered as they dragged her out of the room. Once they were a few yard away from the house, they threw her onto the ground. She landed on the ground with an umph. She looked up and the first thing her tear-filled eyes landed on was her family. Her father, mother, and sister were all standing there. She wasn’t close enough to see their expressions, but she knew for sure that her father’s was one of hate. Her eyes then landed on everyone else. They were her friends, neighbors, and family. She had trusted them. She had loved them.
The next ting she saw was the man. He was the one who had watched her hand heal itself the night before. He was the one who had told them about it. He was the one who had broken his promise. He was the one she officially hated.
She then turned her head and looked at what was right in front of her. It looked like a pile of wood. There was one wooden pole in the middle. Cecilia felt her body go cold.
They were going to burn her alive.
She couldn’t let this happen. She had to escape.
Just as the two men went to pick her back up, Cecilia made a dash for it. She ran faster than she’d ever ran before. She ran all the way into the woods.
And she never stopped running.
